On April 22nd each year we celebrate World Earth Day. The theme of Earth day is to ‘invest in our planet ‘. It is calling for businesses to shift towards sustainable practices. It raises awareness of environmental issues and promotes action to safeguard the planet. The first Earth day was held in 1970 in response to growing pollution and biodiversity concerns. 

It was founded by the environmentalist Gaylord Nelson a former Wisconsin Senator. We have come a long way since then but some would say not far enough. 

I believe involving young people in this celebration more and making them aware of the problems our Earth faces is essential as they will be the ones dealing with it in the future. 

Greta Thunberg the Swedish activist has done just that. She ignited a passion in our young people and is watched and listened to by them constantly. Our planet is in trouble and so people have now started to act in different ways regarding this problem. Green peace is more prominent and children’s authors like myself are writing about it so children can relate to what is happening.

Earth day is wonderful because our earth is wonderful and it deserves more respect than it is getting right now. Thankfully, the awareness is growing .
